Steroids in Baseball

Major League Baseball player Barry Larkin, a twelve-time All-Star shortstop for the Cincinnati Reds, was easily elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame this week. Baseball writers once again debated the issue of electing admitted or suspected steroid users to the Hall when casting their votes. Larkin couldn’t even enjoy the honor of joining the Hall of Fame without being hounded for his opinion on anabolic steroids. It seemed like one of the most high profile steroid scandals of the last decade had finally come to an end in 2011. Barry Bonds was found guilty of obstruction of justice and sentenced to two years probation, 30 days home confinement, 250 hours of community service and a $4,000 fine. The sentencing marked the end of the $75 million dollor government witch-hunt involving Barry Bonds – or so it seemed. But now it may take another 18 months before we see the conclusion. Hall of Fame baseball writer Bill Conlin has recently been accused of child molestation that occurred during the 1960s and 1970s. Seven men and women have told the media that Conlin sexually abused them by fondling and touching their genitalia when they were between the ages of 7 and 12 years old. [Read more…]

The federal government’s BALCO steroid investigation came to an end with the sentencing of Barry Bonds on Friday. Judge Susan Illston sentenced Bonds to two years probation, 30 days home confinement, 250 hours community service and a $4,000 fine. John Rocker has finally admitted to using anabolic steroids while he was a former Major League Baseball relief pitcher who once played for the Atlanta Braves.
