Seal Beach Jail Guard Busted with Anabolic Steroids at Work

A detention officer at the Seal Beach Jail has been arrested on anabolic steroid and bribery charges. The Orange County District Attorney’s Office charged Jose Alday with felony count of an officer receiving bribes, felony possession for sale of a controlled substance (anabolic steroids) and misdemeanor possession of controlled substance paraphernalia (used methamphetamine pipe).

A bribery investigation was initiated in early December 2011 after the Seal Beach Police Department (SBPD) received a tip alleging the Alday had been receiving bribes from inmates at the Seal Beach Jail.

The District Attorney’s Office (OCDA) has accused Alday of receiving bribes that included cash, an iPad, a cell phone and two leather jackets. These items were delivered by visitors of jail inmates. In exchange, Alday would allow unauthorized visitors to smuggle prohibited contraband into the jail. The contraband included alcohol and other items. Alday was working alone when the unauthorized visits occurred at the jail.

The initial investigation did not involve anabolic steroids. However, when Alday was arrested on Christmas Day while working at Seal Beach Jail, the arresting officers discovered steroids in his possession.

The OCDA described Alday as “being in possession of a substantial amount of anabolic steroids at the jail”. The actual quantity of steroids was not specified. It is unclear if the steroids were provided to inmates.

Alday was arraigned at the West Justice Center in Westminister on December 28, 2011. He pleaded not guilty. His bail was set at $100,000. Alday faces a maximum of five years in state prison if he is convicted on the steroid and bribery charges. A pretrial hearing and bail review have been scheduled for January 4, 2012.
