BALCO founder Victor Conte recently claimed that all eight sprinters in the 100 meter final at the 2000 Sydney Olympics were guilty of using anabolic steroids. Conte made the allegations in an interview with the Agence France-Presse (AFP). Maurice Greene, Ato Boldon, Obadele Thompson, Darren Campbell, Dwain Chambers, Aziz Zakari, Jon Drummond and Kim Collins were the finalist in that event.
“In the Sydney 100m final they were all at it (doping),” according to Conte.
Victor Conte had direct knowledge of steroid use by British sprinter Dwain Chambers. Conte actually provided steroids to Chambers in 2003. Chambers was the first athlete caught using a previously undetectable “designer steroid” called tetrahydrogestrinone (THG). THG was also called “the Clear”.
A steroid dealer named Angel Guillermo Heredia, who was linked to several Olympic athletes, had told investigators that he sold steroids, testosterone cream, EPO and stimulants to American sprinter Maurice Greene. Greene was the 100 meter champion at the Sydney Olympics but Heredia had allegedly started providing him with steroids only after Greene had won two Olympic medals.
While Conte may not have had direct knowledge of steroid use by all of the sprinters in the Sydney sprint events, he was certain about the role of steroids and PEDs at the women’s 100 meter final of the 2003 World Championships in France. Conte provided drugs to five of the finalists including the winner of the event – American Kelly White.
“Five other athletes (apart from White) were doped: it was me who supplied the drugs,” added Conte.
White tested positive for Modafinil and was stripped of her gold medals in the 100 meter and 200 meter events. She later admitted using the steroid THG and the blood booster EPO.
Conte has not been impressed with the progress that anti-doping crusaders have had on the use of steroids in sport over the past seven years.
“I believe that before the BALCO affair, 80 per cent of athletes were using steroids, today that figure stands at about 65 per cent,” according to Conte.
