Doctor and Satellite Technician Plead Guilty for Moonlighting as Steroid Dealers

An Alabama physician and satellite technician pleaded guilty last week for their illicit activities moonlighting as steroid dealers. Law enforcement authorities alleged that Dr. Mark Koch of Monroeville conspired with Ashley Rivers to distribute anabolic steroids.  Dr. Koch admitted to using and selling steroids.

Koch purchased and sold EQ-250, DECA-250, Primobolan Depot and Testosterone Cypionate, manufactured by an illicit undergroud lab (UGL) identified as “Roper’s Lab” according to court documents. FBI video surveillance reportedly showed Koch injecting himself with steroids.

The plea agreement suggests that Koch purchased the steroids, through an intermediary, from Ashley Rivers. However, Rivers’ lawyer denied this was the case. He told reporters that this was “not necessarily true” and reminded them that Koch was the target of the investigation while his client was an “ancillary”.

Federal prosecutors recommended the minimum sentence for each defendant under steroid sentencing guidelines. This amounts to two years imprisonment for Dr. Koch and one year imprisonment for Rivers. A reduced sentence or even probation remains a possibility if the pair provides “substantial assistance” to prosecutors in apparently ongoing investigations.
