The founder of the original British Dragon underground steroid laboratory has reportedly died as the result of complications from pneumonia. Edwin Richard Crawley co-founded one of the best-known and most successful steroid brands in history. His death comes only weeks after being released from federal prison in the United States.
Crawley was the target of a United States Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) investigation arising during Operation Raw Deal. Crawley was indicted in September 2007 on charges of anabolic steroid importation and distribution, conspiracy and money laundering. Police in Thailand arrested Crawley at the request of the U.S. DEA via the Mutual Legal and Assistance Treaty (MLAT).
Crawley fought extradition for three years but the Thailand Court of Appeals ruled against Crawley and authorized the continuation of extradition proceedings. He was finally extradited to the United States in March 2011.
Crawley had pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to distribute anabolic steroids on March 18, 2011 in United States District Court in Seattle. He faced 20 years in prison, a one million dollar fine and 5 years probation. However, he was ultimately sentenced him to “credit for time served” due to his deteriorating health while in federal custody. He is survived by a wife and daughter who were at his bedside when he died in a private hospital. He was 47 years old.
