Philadelphia Police Detective Keith Gidelson pleaded not guilty to seventeen counts related to the distribution of anabolic steroids and human growth hormone in federal magistrate court on Tuesday. United States Magistrate Judge Linda Caracappa released Gidelson on $50,000 unsecured bond and placed under 24-hour house arrest under electronic monitoring. Gidelson had been in jail since his arrest last week.
Gidelson, a detective on the special-victims unit, had been named as the purported ringleader of a Sciroxx steroid distribution enterprise in the United States. Sciroxx is an underground lab operating in Europe that produces various anabolic steroids under names such as Testodex Enthanthate 250 (testosterone enanthate), Testodex Cypionate 250 (testosterone cypionate), Nandrodex 300 (nandrolone decanoate) and Trenadex Enanthate 200 (trenbolone enanthate).
Gidelson is accused of conspiring with several other individuals, including two other Philadelphia police officers, to distribute anabolic steroids.
The federal indictment represents a “dark day” for Philadelphia Police Department according to Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey, “It’s another dark day for our department, but one that certainly does not reflect the good work that goes on every single day by the men and women of this department.”
The three police officers have all been suspended and will likely be dismissed from the force.
