Man on Steroids Maims Oklahoma Police Officer

Oklahoma City police officer Chad Peery may be a quadriplegic after sustaining severe injuries during an attack by three men as he attempted to escort them from Dan O’Brien’s Public House in northwest Oklahoma City. Joshua Rinken, Jimmy Smith and Cadmio Lopez have been charged with one count of maiming and one count of conspiracy to commit assault and battery upon a police officer.

Rinken’s alleged use of anabolic steroids has been referenced numerous times in news accounts possibly implying that steroids played a role in the violent attack. Considerable attention has selectively been given to anabolic steroids rather than alcohol even though the incident occurred in an Oklahoma City bar.

After Rinken was arrested, detectives discovered 52 oxandrolone tablets in his truck. They also found 5 empty beer cans in his truck although some media outlets neglected to mention the beer cans choosing only to report the steroid pills.

Assistant District Attorney Scott Rowland referred to his history of steroid use but neglected to mention any history of alcohol problems.

“A tragedy like this was a long time coming,” said Assistant District Attorney Scott Rowland in reference to Rinken’s past. “This man has shown through his entire adult life that he is violent, that he abuses steroids, that he is prone to temper mood swings and the community is just not safe as long as he is among them.”

Rinken has a history of violence and accusations of steroid use have made in previous police reports.

Another ex-girlfriend reported to Oklahoma City police last September that Rinken was making rude and threatening phone calls to her. She told police “she is very afraid … because he carries a … pistol … is a heavy steroid user (and) will go into rages,” according to a police report.

The mother of Rinken’s children was the only one to point to any possible role alcohol may have played in his violent behavior.

An Oklahoma County judge denied bond for Rinken after a string of witnesses testified about a history of similar behavior.  The mother of Rinken’s two children said he abused drugs and alcohol and was always looking for a fight when he went out drinking.

Oklahoma City police officers have set up a fund for Officer Chad Peery, a father of three, at the Municipal Employees Credit Union in Oklahoma City. Peery is recovering in the Intensive Care Unit at Oklahoma University Medical Center. He sustained fractures to his third and fourth vertebrae and has little feeling from the neck down.
