A British bodybuilder was arrested after he broke into a pharmacy and stole £2,673 worth of anabolic steroids. The Sunday Mercury website described Scott Gilbert as a “muscle-bound” bodybuilder whose obsession with steroids led him to steal steroids from the Superdrug pharmacy in Stone, Staffordshire.
Defense attorney Bobby Bell blamed the theft on his client’s 3-year steroid addiction. Bell at least made sure to distinguish steroids from addictive drugs such as heroin and cocaine. He claims the bodybuilders was forced to resort to crime to feed his steroid addiction after he could no longer pay for steroids with money earned from his job as a gardener. (“Stoke-On-Trent bodybuilder smashed his way into Superdrug and stole £2,000 worth of goods” January 24).
“He has a three-year addiction to steroids, which has cost him in the region of £7,000.”
“He has been out of trouble for three years, so he has not been regularly committing offences to feed this addiction. Work had dried-up and he could no longer feed this drug use through employment.”
Gilbert will be sentenced this week after he undergoes an assessment for drug abuse and addiction.
Gilbert is not the first bodybuilder to blame criminal actions upon steroid addiction. The existence of a medical condition known as “steroid addiction” is the subject of considerable debate. There is not a widely agreed upon criteria for such a condition in the scientific community.
