Marijuana Tip Leads to Florida Steroid Bust

The Collier County Sheriff’s Office’s Vice and Narcotics Bureau initiated there investigation of a Naples-area personal trainer and his wife after receiving an anonymous tip about marijuana dealing. The investigation expanded as evidence of steroid distribution emerged.

The Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant last week involving a SWAT team. The steroid raid was apparently the Florida small-town version of “shock and awe” as described by Lt. Harold Minch. (“Shock and awe” refers to “military doctrine based on the use of overwhelming power, dominant battlefield awareness, dominant maneuvers, and spectacular displays of force to paralyze an adversary’s perception of the battlefield and destroy its will to fight”).

The Sheriff’s Office didn’t take over a Middle Eastern country but they did seize approximately $20,000 of suspected anabolic steroids along with $6,000 of marijuana and drug-related paraphernalia. [“Collier deputies seize $20K worth of steroids, arrest North Naples fitness trainer and wife,” January 21]

“It’s more than I think anybody (involved in the bust) had ever seen,” said Lt. Harold Minch, of the Sheriff’s Office’s Vice and Narcotics Bureau. “It was the largest steroid grab we’ve had in awhile, at least in this agency.”

“Something like this doesn’t happen over night,” Minch said. “This was several months of work.”

Around 5:45 a.m. Thursday, detectives, along with the Sheriff’s Office’s SWAT team, executed a search warrant in the Troemners’ home, which Minch described as “shock and awe at the beginning.”

“We believe that they were fully aware of what was happening and why we were there,” Minch said. “They were very cooperative, very polite. There were no nasty exchanges.”

Lifetime Fitness member and client of the arrested personal trainer was shocked that her trainer didn’t practice the healthy lifestyle that he preached, but she was more upset that her gym had hired a trainer that was a convicted felon (for concealed gun charges in 2003).

“You want to believe this person is living a healthy lifestyle because that’s what they’re promoting,” she said. “It’s disappointing.”

Steroid charges are pending the results of lab analysis of the vials seized during the raid.
