John Keker, the founding partner of the San Francisco law firm Keker and Van Nest, recently filed a motion in Los Angeles federal court on behalf of his client Lance Armstrong. All three English-language news agencies all reported the story. The Associated Press (AP), the Agence France-Press (AFP) and Reuters Group (Reuters) usually report similar accounts of major news stories.
A casual reader of the recent Lance Armstrong story would come away with a very different perspective depending on which wire story they read. The court filing was characterized as an attack on the freedom of the press according to one account whereas other accounts characterized the motion as an attack on federal government employees for violating grand jury secrecy laws. North Korean Soccer Team Tests Positive for Steroids After Being Struck by Lightning
Five members of the North Korean soccer team (Korea DPR) have tested positive for 14 different banned anabolic steroids at the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Frankfurt, Germany. The North Korean delegation told FIFA that a “lightning strike” was responsible for the positive steroid tests. The five players were reportedly struck by lightning while training in North Korea on June 8, 2011. A traditional Chinese medicine containing an extract from the hairy gland of an Asian musk deer was used to treat the players for the effects of the lightning strike. Major League Baseball Suspends Four Dominican Summer League Players for Steroids
Major League Baseball has suspended four minor league players this month who were playing for their teams’ Dominican Summer League affiliates. Chicago Cubs pitcher Yomar Morel tested positive for the steroid boldenone (aka Equipoise) while his teammate pitcher Enyelberth Pena tested positive for nandrolone (aka Deca Durabolin). Houston Astros pitcher Manuel Sanchez and San Diego Padres pitcher Miguel Severino both tested positive for stanozolol (aka Winstrol). Judge Declares Mistrial in Roger Clemens Trial After Federal Prosecutors Make Colossal Mistake
United States District Judge Reggie Walton declared a mistrial in the Roger Clemens case today after federal prosecutors made a colossal mistake. Judge Walton clearly blamed the government for the mistrial. Assistant United States Attorneys Steven Durham and Daniel Butler likely suffered one of the most humiliating days of their careers as Judge Walton chastised them for making a mistake that even a first-year law student would have known to avoid. Judge Walton reminded the prosecutors how much taxpayer payer money was spent on the Roger Clemens investigation and prosecution.
