NFL Football Player Shawne Merriman Denies Smuggling Anabolic Steroids

Patrick Moran, of the Buffalo Sports Daily, reported that Buffalo Bills linebacker Shawne Merriman was caught smuggling anabolic steroids across the United States – Canadian border. Moran, citing a “reliable source close to the situation”, claims that Merriman was detained by United States Customs and Border Patrol in the early morning hours of July 28, 2011 during which anabolic steroids were found on his possession. Track Star Fights Olympic Ineligibility from Use of ExtenZe

Athletes Who Intentionally Use Steroids Almost Never Get Caught

Professional athletes who purposely use anabolic steroids are “almost never” caught according to a top anti-doping attorney who has defended dozens of high-profile athletes involved in doping cases. Attorney Howard Jacobs believes most athletes who receive analytical positives inadvertently consume a contaminated dietary supplement or fail to read the ingredients on medications prescribed by their doctor. Random Steroid Testing on Any Given Sunday in the NFL

Players in the National Football League (NFL) will be subject to random in-season testing for anabolic steroids during the upcoming season. The game day steroid testing will begin on September 8, 2011 when the New Orleans Saints visit the Green Bay Packers for the first preseason game of the NFL season.

Adolpho Birch, the NFL senior vice president of law and labor policy, provided additional details to the new anti-doping procedures that will be implemented as part of the most collective bargaining agreement between the NFL and the NFL Players’ Associatoin (NFLPA). [Read more…]

Chael Sonnen Jokes About His Steroid Use

Chael Sonnen joked about steroids and his steroid-related suspension while answering questions by UFC Fight Club members who were in Philadelphia for UFC 133. Sonnen tested positive for anabolic steroids (testosterone) at UFC 117. Sonnen was originally suspended for one year. However, Sonnen appealed to the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) last year claiming that he used testosterone as part of a hormone replacement therapy (HRT) program prescribed by his physician. The CSAC accepted Sonnen’s HRT defense but did not entirely exonerate him because he failed to follow the proper protocol for notifying the CSAC of his medical condition (hypogonadism). [Read more…]

Steroid Use by Rugby Players at Coca-Cola Craven Week

The South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport reported that 8.5% of 17 and 18 year-old rugby players tested positive for anabolic steroid use at the Coca-Cola Craven Week rugby tournament in Kimberley in July.

Khalid Galant, the CEO for the Institute for Drug-Free Sport, announced that only 47% of rugby players were subjected to anti-doping tests. Galant reported analytical positives for 4 athletes out of this limited sample of participants. [Read more…]
