Random Steroid Testing on Any Given Sunday in the NFL

Players in the National Football League (NFL) will be subject to random in-season testing for anabolic steroids during the upcoming season. The game day steroid testing will begin on September 8, 2011 when the New Orleans Saints visit the Green Bay Packers for the first preseason game of the NFL season.

Adolpho Birch, the NFL senior vice president of law and labor policy, provided additional details to the new anti-doping procedures that will be implemented as part of the most collective bargaining agreement between the NFL and the NFL Players’ Associatoin (NFLPA). [Read more…]

Alabama Doctor Indicted for Selling Anabolic Steroids from an Underground Lab

Alabama doctor Mark Peter Koch, D.O. pleaded not guilty to possession with intent to distribute anabolic steroids and conspiracy to distribute anabolic steroids. Koch was indicted on federal charges along with three other men. Koch appears to be the connection between the three men. He apparently bought the steroids from one co-defendant and shared them with the other two co-defendants. [Read more…]

Methyltestosterone and IGF-1 Concerns Lead Major League Baseball to Ban Velvet Deer Antler

Major League Baseball has warned major and minor league baseball players to avoid any dietary supplements and sprays containing “deer antler velvet extract”. Buffalo Prison Guard Pleads Guilty to Selling Steroids

A prison guard at the Buffalo Federal Detention Facility in Batavia pleaded guilty to one count of “distribution and possession with intent to distribute anabolic steroids” on August 8, 2011. Richard Lazzaro was a federal contract employee working as a detention officer in the Buffalo prison when he was busted selling steroids.

Chael Sonnen Jokes About His Steroid Use

Chael Sonnen joked about steroids and his steroid-related suspension while answering questions by UFC Fight Club members who were in Philadelphia for UFC 133. Sonnen tested positive for anabolic steroids (testosterone) at UFC 117. Sonnen was originally suspended for one year. However, Sonnen appealed to the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) last year claiming that he used testosterone as part of a hormone replacement therapy (HRT) program prescribed by his physician. The CSAC accepted Sonnen’s HRT defense but did not entirely exonerate him because he failed to follow the proper protocol for notifying the CSAC of his medical condition (hypogonadism). [Read more…]

Steroid Use by Rugby Players at Coca-Cola Craven Week

The South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport reported that 8.5% of 17 and 18 year-old rugby players tested positive for anabolic steroid use at the Coca-Cola Craven Week rugby tournament in Kimberley in July.

Khalid Galant, the CEO for the Institute for Drug-Free Sport, announced that only 47% of rugby players were subjected to anti-doping tests. Galant reported analytical positives for 4 athletes out of this limited sample of participants. [Read more…]

North Korean Government Provides Steroids to Its Athletes

The North Korean government manufacturers and supplies its athletes with anabolic steroids according to a North Korean defector. The anonymous defector was interviewed by the Chosun Ilbo. The Chosun Ilbo is the largest daily newspaper in South Korea. High-ranking officials within the Physical Culture and Sports Ministry allegedly oversee the covert manufacture of anabolic steroids and performance-enhancing drugs at two facilities in Pyongyang. Former NBA Basketball Player Busted with Eight Bottles of Steroids

Former National Basketball Association (NBA) player Samaki Walker was found in possession of eight vials of injectable anabolic steroids when police officers pulled him over during a traffic stop in Kingman, Arizona. As Department of Public Safety officers approached his 2002 Mercedes-Benz, Walker was trying to eat marijuana in order to conceal it from authorities.  [Read more…]
