Tour de France Winner Proves Even a Doper Can Get Sponsors

Cyclist Jan Ullrich proved that even an athlete marred by a doping scandal can still make money from sponsorships. Ullrich was the first German to win the 1997 Tour de France and was the runner-up to Lance Armstrong in five subsequent Tour de France races.  He was incredibly popular in his homeland until he was linked to a major doping scandal in 2006. Spanish Tennis Star Rafa Nadal Uses Steroids in French Satirical TV Show

The popular French satirical television show known as “Les Guignols de l’Info” has broadcast a controversial video skit implying athletes from neighboring Spain are using anabolic steroids and performance-enhancing drugs. The skit displayed the logos of ten different Spanish sports federations including tennis, cycling and soccer. At least one of the federations planned to sue the French network Canal+ for slander and the unauthorized use of their logo. [Read more…]

Olympic Steroids Tester Writes Novel About Doping

Harvey Shapiro, M.D., the former Chairman of the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of California San Diego, has penned a medical-thriller about anabolic steroids, performance-enhancing drugs and gene doping entitled “Morphed: Winning at Any Cost Even if it Means Altering Your DNA”. Shapiro was inspired to write the novel after he served as a Doping Control Officer at the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City. During his time collecting urine samples from Olympic athletes, he spent considerable time thinking about all the means and methods by which athletes use steroids and PEDs while going undetected by anti-doping personnel. WADA: Over Ten Percent of Tested Athletes Using Steroids and PEDs

David Howman, the director general of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), has admitted that the use of anabolic steroids and performance-enhancing drugs may be much more pervasive than the anti-doping testing statistics suggest. Conventional wisdom gleaned from the number of athletes actually caught taking steroids would place the number of steroid users at approximately 1-2 percent of tested athletes. Brazilian Soccer Star Discusses Steroid Use in Russian Premier League

Brazilian soccer star Daniel Carvalho initially admitted receiving injections of anabolic steroids while he played in the Russian Premier League. He told Brazilian radio station ESPN Estadao that medical doctors with CSKA Moscow regularly injected him with steroids to help him bulk up. Carvalho played for CSKA Moscow from 2003 until 2010. Half-Million Dollar Steroid Bust in Tennessee

A Tennessee man has been arrested after a stash of anabolic steroids was seized from a local storage unit. Leslie Parker, Jr. was implicated as a major steroid dealer distributing product to mid-level dealers around the country.
