An activist and drug counselor wrote a letter to the California Attorney General Kamala Harris suggesting that Stanislaus County law enforcement officers might be “pumped up on steroids and out of control” on the streets shooting people. County substance abuse counselor John Mataka expressed concern that recent shootings by police, including one currently being investigated as a murder/manslaughter case, may have been done under the influence of anabolic steroids.
“I need to know that the officers on the street are not pumped up on steroids and out of control.” […]
“This incident needs an independent investigation so that the community can regain trust in law enforcement,” Mataka writes.
Former Stanislaus County Detective Kari Abbey killed Rita Elias last year. She allegedly killed Elias during an altercation while evicting her from an apartment complex owned by Abbey’s family. Abbey’s home was subsequently searched during an internal affairs investigation. The search uncovered 16 vials of injectable anabolic steroids and 54 syringes, a marijuana grow operation, and evidence implicating Abbey in embezzlement and receiving stolen property from a government agency.
Abbey is expected to be arraigned in June on various charges arising from the investigation.
