Dave “Hendu” Henderson, the former Major League Baseball outfielder who spent time playing for the Oakland Athletics between 1988 and 1993, doesn’t think any anabolic steroids should be voted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Henderson appeared on “The Wheelhouse with John Lund”, a sports talk radio show in San Francisco. He told Lund that baseball players who used anabolic steroids, including former teammates, are cheaters. And cheaters are not Hall of Famers.
Henderson aimed his comments at former teammates and Bash Brothers Jose Canseco and Mark McGwire as well as other baseball players who have used steroids such as Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa and Alex Rodriguez.
Henderson admitted that anabolic steroid use was an open secret during his time with the Oakland Athletics. After all, Henderson had a locker next to the self-proclaimed “godfather of steroids in baseball” Jose Canseco.
“All I know is us outfielders — Rickey (Henderson), myself, and Canseco our lockers were right next to each other. So us three knew,” said Henderson.
Henderson knew that some of his teammates were using steroids and was certain that anyone who had gained 40-50 pounds of muscle during their career was obviously on steroids as well.
However, Henderson and his teammate Rickey Henderson were never tempted to use steroid in spite of their proximity to Jose Canseco. Both claim to have been 100% steroid-free.
Dave Henderson took it one step further and told Lund that he didn’t use steroids because he had “good parents”. Apparently, Henderson feels that good parents are the key to preventing steroid use.
“Well I grew up with good parents and my parents taught me not to take drugs, and it happens that steroids are drugs, right?” said Henderson. “So I didn’t have a choice. I don’t take drugs so I never took steroids. I had no temptation at all.”
