A New Hampshire man with a history of violence and steroid-related arrests has shot five police officers and killed the police chief of the small sea-coastal community of Greenland. Cullen Mutrie was arrested as recently as February for the possession of anabolic steroids according to the Gloucester Times newspaper.

Greenland Police Chief Michael Maloney and four police officers assigned to the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Drug Task Force arrived to serve a drug-related search warrant on the morning of April 13, 2012. Chief Maloney was killed by a shot to the head only eight days before his retirment. The four officers were also shot.

Detective Gregory Turner (Dover Police Department), Detective Eric Kulberg (University of New Hampshire police force), Detective Scott Kukesh (Newmarket Police Department) and Detective Jeremiah Murphy (Rochester Police Department) were the names of the officers shot by Mutrie. Detectives Kukesh and Murphy remained in ICU at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital after undergoing surgery for bullet wounds to the chest.

Cullen Mutrie has a long history of violence around . He pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct resulting from a 2007 altercation. He was arrested again after assaulting a woman in the summer of 2010. At the time of the assault, it was known that Mutrie was in possession of multiple firearms including one thought to be carried on his person.

Police went to his house to confiscate his weapons and discover several vials of anabolic steroids in plain view on the living room coffee table in July 2010. Six months later, the New Hampshire state crime laborary confirmed the vials contained testosterone cypionate, trenbolone acetate (“Tren”), Sustanon 250, boldenone undecylenate (Equipoise), stanozolol (Winstrol) and nandrolone decanoate (Deca Durabolin) according to an affidavit by Greenland Police Officer Wayne Young.

The steroid discovery ultimately led to Murie’s arrest on January 19, 2011 on nine felony charges involving anabolic steroids.

Mutrie was reportedly 6-foot-3 and 275 pounds. His history with anabolic steroids unfortunately reinforces the negative stereotypes of “roid rage” that is popularly associated with steroid users. Such incidents give credence to the tenuous association between steroids and “roid rage”.
