James Gahan, the father who infamously injected his 13-year old son with anabolic steroids to help him become an Olympic athlete, has completed his six-year prison sentence and is talking to high school athletes about steroids. Gahan had pleaded guilty to possessing and distributing anabolic steroid testosterone to a minor. He collaborated with a Florida coach and trainer to provide his son with the anabolic steroids testosterone and Deca Durabolin, human growth hormone (hGH) and human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) beginning as early as May 24, 2004.
Corey Gahan was a national-level inline skating champion whose accomplishments included winning the 2004 Inline Speed Skating Nationals, second-place at the 2005 National Indoor Speed Skating Championships and a national indoor record for the 1500 meter sophomore men inlines set. James had hoped his son could make the transitions to the Olympic sport of speed ice skating.
Now that Gahan has been released from federal prison, he is speaking to high school students about the dangers of anabolic steroids and performance-enhancing drugs as part of his court-ordered sentence of community service.
Surprisingly, James Gahan didn’t discuss how steroids had adversely impacted the life of his teenage son during an interview with an NBC television affiliate station in Grand Rapids (Michigan). Instead, he focused on himself.
“If somebody wants to see what the destruction of steroids really will do, then I can provide it for them, because I’m taking medication now — probably 45 pills a day — because my insides have eroded,” said James.
James did not specify how steroids had “eroded” his insides nor did he identify the medical condition(s) that required the use of 45 pills per day.
James did briefly discuss his son Corey but only to demand that his son accept the consequences of being a cheater.
“He knew what was going on; we all knew what we were doing,” said James. “I’m the parent. I’m taking all the blame. But for him, life will be much easier for him if he came to the consequences that he cheated.”
Corey reportedly has no interest in communicating with James until his father seeks forgiveness for leading him to use anabolic steroids. Corey has previously stated his belief that his father was never truly sorry about what he did but only about getting caught.
